Mission Statement
motiroti creates beautiful art that invites you to celebrate difference and connectivity, via an intriguing and open dialogue. We challenge and tease perceptions of artists, organisations, audiences and individuals.
motiroti supports existing groups to create art projects that excite imaginations, examine cultural assumptions and precipitate change. The work created is fun, dynamic and uses the catalyst of familiar and cutting edge techniques. It encourages and supports the work of new artists and pushes the boundaries of new technology.
Artistic Policy: Aims & Objectives
To make art projects
- generated by an interest in working with people and for people
- that transform space, and the meaning of space
- in the context of and with the intent of progressing current thinking about race, sexuality and gender
- that are created through rigorous processes to a high standard and that have a wide reading and a popular appeal
Aesthetic Ethos
- The projects that we generate are for all comers
- We take a view on the appropriateness of the medium, marketing, education, and the involvement of venues and of participants and fellow artists
- All projects have an element of inclusion and collaboration. This ranges from very wide participation to close collaboration between a small numbers of artists
- The cultural language is one that speaks to many, frequently with popular media and popular iconography
- There is a pioneering spirit involving technology, and the selection of artists and collaborators; many artists have begun their careers with motiroti
- The work is informed by cultural energy from South Asia and from the Caribbean, being contemporary cultures that embrace and build from their often complex cultural heritage. Thus the work strives to be grounded in the contemporary
- We aim to challenge artistic boundaries and create work of beauty and popular relevance
